The devil in a suit. That was the first impression the news informant Ren Yu had of his target, Fang Yingli.

Hidden behind his fieldscope, he had watched him throw punches with brutal precision in the boxing ring. He had also glimpsed him in his suit, exuding a cold, detached austerity as he upheld the dignity of the law. Yet no matter how schemingly Ren Yu tried to get close, he could never pry from Fang Yingli the exclusive inside story he wanted.

One night, after one drink too many, Ren Yu crossed a line. He tore off his blindfold and met Fang Yingli’s amused gaze. Only then did he confirm that Fang Yingli had no interest in his bribes—what interested him was Ren Yu himself.

Ren Yu thought he had disguised himself well. Until one day, when he pressed too hard for a lead, Fang Yingli pinned him against the wall.

“I know what you want. I can give it to you.” He crushed the pinhole camera he had just plucked from Ren Yu’s person, then leaned down slightly, making sure the recording pen in Ren Yu’s chest pocket would catch every word.

“But it will cost you.”

Later, Ren Yu found a hidden folder on his computer filled with audio files copied from that very recording pen. The contents were unspeakable.

“You’re my hidden obsession—and my open desire.”
